Advantages of Mobile Learning

Mobile learning has several advantages.

  • Flexible : anytime anywhere.

  • More affordable compared to conventional learning environments such as schools and universities.

  • Portable devices make group learning more effective and purposeful due to the fact that information may be exchanged in real time.

  • Possibility of using (by learners) applications that match specific learning objectives inside and outside classrooms.

  • May support important learning theories such as constructivism , collaborative learning and learner centered environments.

  • The technological support is widely available and costs are decreasing.

  • Large amount of course material available online and in the for of applications at low cost or even free.

  • Because of the relatively low cost and wide access, children from low income communities are able to access good quality learning material.

  • Enables learners to learn in different contexts and situations.

  • Different learning styles using different activities (audio, video, animation, interactive applications, discussions, ..) may be used.

  • Learning may be extended outside the classroom for activities started inside the classroom.

  • Learning may be started outside the classroom to be completed inside the classroom.

  • Being widely used, mobile devices may easily be used to engage learners and get them highly involved in the learning process.

  • Social interaction on a much wider scale made possible.

  • Portable devices may be used outside the classroom and the house and therefore may extend the learning environment beyond closed places and into more authentic contexts.
